Zinkoff is in a class by himself

Nothing makes Mrs. Biswell madder than sloppiness. She has had sloppy students before, but Zinkoff is in a class by himself, especially with a pencil in his hand. His numbers are a disaster. His five looks like 8, 8 looks like 0, 4 looks like 7.

Hi,

Does the bolded part in the above amount to "Zinkoff is unique in his own ways of sloppiness?"

Besides, is the bolded "numbers" in the above equal to "numerals?" Thanks.
