Vocabulary

Zero or nougth

What word should I use for mathematical article?

I write(but I don't shure it is right):

1. variable is equal to zero

2. the series tends to nought

3. values that close to nought(or close to zero values?)

If there are several rules that determine the use of these words?

"nought" seems extremely old-fashioned to me. Is anyone still using that word? I thought we stopped using it years ago.
