zenith

Hi !
to my understanding, the word 'zenith' is a surreal/overtop way of indicating the highest point of something. My question is, is there any restriction for using this term, let's say a teen is trying to make a remark anouncement, or in similar situation.

1) I'm at the zenith of world
2) My career has reached the zenith
3) The power gauge has reached its zenith
4) Your father has gone to the zenith ( supposingly zenith also mean heaven?)
5) You can touch the zenith of the wall with your bamboo stick.

Correct these if they were not ok and state why, please

Constructive tips for using the 'zenith' is highly helpful, too.

Thank you in advance! - Terr

I have to say I think I've gone through my life without ever using the word zenith. As you say, it is a rather 'over-the-top' word, so you should only use it where it is justified. You shouldn't use it as a simple synonym for peak/top.

  • It means the utmost top, the very highest, the absolute peak.
  • It's not really a word in common use - it tends to be in a hype situation.

Nona The BritI have to say I think I've gone through my life without ever using the word zenith.
Hi all

I agree with what Nona says completely. I'd just like to say that I have actually used the word in its scientific meaning:

The sun was at zenith.

Only the astronomical meaning and the figurative meaning used with such things as careers come to mind as normal and typical uses of zenith.

Thank you nona the brit and the rest!

From what have you corrected on my examples, I'm getting the feeling that the word 'zenith' isn't a measure that you should tide to things physically appearing, like 'of world', 'of wall' were wrong, but more as a state of something that you can't really put up a formal scale to it, like 'career', 'health', 'power'

In that regard, I would

Hi guys,

Zenith of the world sounds odd to me.

My dictionary offers these definitions, whcih sound fine to me.

The part of the celestial sphere directly above an observer. Thus, I'd say the sun is at its zenith.

The highest or culminating point, eg of power. Thus, I'd say the late Victorian Age was the zenith of the British Empir
