Youtube sentence correct?

I came across this sentence when browsing youtube-songs, but I don't know whether the use of these tenses is correct:

"I suffered under depression, but it has made me stronger!"
(I know it's a weird example, but is made me think about grammar...)

I guess he wants to tell that his depression has ended in the past, but the fact being stronger continues into the present moment?
Or would you say "have suffered or was suffering" instead?

Thank you!

  • No, I wouldn't.

No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't say the original, either. 'I suffered from depression.'
