Youse guys - versus gentlemen

Hello,

I am presently employed as an Immigration Officer. We have new officers of a younger generation and I notice how they communicate when dealing with the public.

Example: A car load of three citizens of another country are referred to Immigration to determine what thir business visit entails. When this particular officer calls the (3) men in question to the counter for further examination this is what she says: What are youse guys doing here today?

This is most unprofessional. Generally, these men are in their late 40's, early fifties. This officer is maybe 24 years old.

I would say something like this: Good morning, gentlemen-can you define the purpose of your business trip today?

How do I teach these young officers proper communication skills without anyone taking offense?

The use of "youse guys" is an abomination. It indicates poor education and an upbringing in a low-class home. If your colleagues are native speakers, I imagine there is little you can do.

  • Correcting their English would be futile as they are hopelessly lost to bad grammar and will remain at a low-level position due to inferior communication skills.
  • If your colleagues are not native speakers, show them this reply and ask them if this is the sort of English they wish to speak.
