You're really something

Hi teachers,

When someone finished a fast like 3 days, and you want to compliement him on his strength and perservance, would this expression "you're really something" fit the content?

Would you also be kind to correct my sentence question since I had trouble writing it?

Thanks

I agree, but do be careful. Colloquially "you're really something" is often used in a sarcastic way!

Hi Clive,

Thanks for correcting my sentence.

Do natives sometimes say it without "really", so it would be "She's something"?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, occasionally. But such expressions imply a casual and familiar relationship, and usually involve a rather arch tone of voice.

Just overlooked one word.

Hi Clive,

I'm sorry I have one more question:

Does "you're really something" have an encouragement tone in it? And "way to go" too?

Thanks

Hi,

Maybe, maybe not. These terms are often used as praise, but often sarcastically.

Much depends on the context, and on eg the tone of voice.
