I saw this phrase from a game. I do not understand what it means. Many thanks. I usually hear it in connection with a hitter really clouting a baseball. (He ripped one over the fence.)

Never thought about it much, but it might refer to knocking the cover off the ball. Baseballs have a rawhide cover which is stitched together f
