Your mouth is lonely

I saw a translation for a Japanese expression, kuchisabishi.
"When you are not hungry, but you can eat because your mouth is lonely."

Is the part "lonely" understandable to English native speakers. How do you feel that part?

It's very metaphoric, of course, but I think I understand the idea. In fact, I think most people who eat popcorn while watching a movie are only doing it because "their mouths are lonely".
