Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Aron Kuisch. I am eighteen years old and at the moment in 6VWO. I was born in Gouda, but I now live in Houten, near Utrecht. I would like to study International Bachelor Communication and Media next year and in this letter I will explain why.
After I had the chance to visit the Open Day, to read the brochures and to attend the Erasmus Student for a day programme, I already learned a lot about the IBCoM study. This certainly appealed to me. I also took part in ‘Proefstuderen’ so as to gain a clear understanding of what studying IBCoM at the Erasmus University and studying at the university in general means. In order to find out how it would be like to analyze the several aspects of communication (new media in particular), I decided to write my Research Paper about the role social media played during the Arabic Spring. To try and make the IBCoM experience complete, I decided to write this paper fully in English. In doing so, I was able to find out even more whether IBCoM suited me. Now that I am done writing, I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the process of writing this paper and investigating the effects media had. It made me realize that IBCoM is the only study I could see myself enjoy all the way through. As a matter of fact, it has everything I am looking for in a study.
First of all, (new) media are becoming increasingly important for businesses and our society in general, providing plenty of opportunities on the job market. A few years ago, a lot of these new forms of media did not even exist. Today, we could not live without them. It is involved in our everyday lives now. The way we communicate, do business, think about relation- and friendships, has changed drastically over the past few years and the (new) media played a certain role in these developments. As I said before , I already did research on the role media played. I found this highly fascinating and definitely would like to learn a lot more about the cultural, economic and political impact of media and communications.
Second, the way the study is organized. The opportunity to create your own programme, for example. A general introduction in the first year and the freedom to choose which area you would like to focus on in the second year: communication and politics, media and entertainment, communication and organizations or a minor in a related field like sociology. And, of course, ample opportunities to go abroad in the third year.
Not only that, but also the balance between the practical and theoretical courses. The few examples I heard of –creating your own app, managing a communication campaign- really spoke to me. I would like to become a public relations manager in an internationally renowned organization and think that IBCoM forms the perfect foundation, providing me the required tools. It could be the kick-start for a career in communications.
Furthermore, the small teaching groups. This way, a better interaction is made possible between professor and student, but also among students themselves, which I think is very important. A small group of thoroughly motivated students from all over the world, stimulating each other with their work. A group in which I hope to contribute next year as well.
The contact with fellow students and thus with different cultures in IBCoM its cosmopolitan classroom is something I would also really enjoy. Although I am born in the Netherlands, my father is from Surinamese origin and I have been in Surinam several times to visit members of our family. Furthermore, I visited several European countries (Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, England), as well as some outside of Europe, such as the United States, Thailand and Curacao. My family and I will also visit China this summer. This already gave me the possibility to experience different cultures and this I derived great pleasure from. It also made me curious about cultures I did not yet experience. The international students attending the Erasmus university, and especially those in the IBCoM classroom, would enable me to get to know these different cultures even more.
With an 8 being my average mark, I do not think that the English language (or communicating with the international students) will cause me any problems. However, in order to further improve my English, I followed the Cambridge Advanced English course and hope to receive my certificate in Advanced English before summer. Initially, I did not want to write my motivation letter until I received my CAE certificate. However, I figured that it would be a bit too close to the application deadline of May 15.
The Erasmus University, located in Rotterdam, has close ties to its urban environment. It was nearly bombed flat during the Second World War and it was decided to reinvent the city by encouraging modern architecture. Rotterdam attracts me a lot because of this modern appearance, young vibe and different ethnicities (the most multicultural city in The Netherlands).
The university not only offers a multi-cultural sphere, but also a great deal of exchange programmes with universities abroad. This would be another reason for me to choose to study at the Erasmus University instead of the Dutch equivalent at another University.
These days, a lot of people in the Netherlands live without dreams and stay in the same sort of environment with the same sort of people their whole life. There is nothing wrong with that of course, but I just cannot see myself do the same. I want to discover other cultures, meet new people from different countries, be challenged over and over again. I want to see as much of the world as possible and learn how to live on my own in a whole different place. I think that it will be beneficial for my personal development and an investment for the future. When studying abroad, a different education system would also give me the chance to follow courses not available in the Netherlands. Hence, I would be more than happy to make use of the several possibilities to go abroad.
Since I have been to the United States in 2010 I am looking forward to studying or doing an internship there and, ultimately, I would like to live and work as a communications specialist in the US, hailed the 'Country of Dreams'. IBCoM, in teaching me the required skills, and the Erasmus University, with its close ties with universities, faculties and research schools all over the world, could provide me with the perfect foundation to become a international professional in the field of communications.
To summarize, IBCoM covers the impact of media and communication, which intrigues me, and offers a wide range of options to choose from. It found a balance between the practical and theoretical side and provides plenty of opportunities on the job market. The international approach and the small teaching groups with students from all over the world were decisive for me. As I said before, it has everything I am looking for in a study.
Exploring communication across various media with my fellow students, using the latest research methods, to develop the skills required for a professional career in communications in the vibrant city of Rotterdam is what I would like to do for the next three years. I definitely can see myself pursue an international career in communications; International Bachelor Communication and Media could help to achieve my dream and I am willing to work very hard to make this dream of mine come true.
I am looking forward to hearing from you,
Yours faithfully,
Aron Kuisch
