YOUR BRINGING

I've seen this written lots of times: "We appreciate your bringing this to our attention". Is it correct? YOUR bringing? And if it is, what's the explanation?

Are "we appreciate your beating everyone in the room" or "we appreciate his eating cabbage" also correct then? I wonder!

Hi Albinario, and welcome to the forums. The -ing forms of those verbs are called gerunds, and they act like nouns. It's actually correct to therefore have the possessive form "your" or "his" before them, although you'll also commonly hear the object form before them too.

Thanks, that makes sense, but what about "We appreciate you're bringing this to our attention"? Is that incorrect then?
0
That would be completely wrong.

Hmm why?
Would "We appreciate THAT you're bringing this to our attention" be correct then?
I thought my previous example was also correct.

Don't forget that you're means you are. Its not the same as your. That is why your sentences are incorrect.

Err I know you're means you are. But wouldn't it be correct if I said like "We appreciate the fact that you're bringing this to our attention"? Thought it would mean the same thing as "We appreciate you're bringing this to our attention" (or with "that")

We appreciate you're bringing this to our attention. incorrect

We appreciate that you're bringing this to our attention. ok.

These sentences don't mean quite the same thing as 'We appreciate your bringing this to our attention'.

OK, so:

1. We appreciate your bringing this to our attention. - CORRECT
2. We appreciate that you are bringing this to our attention. - CORRECT
3. We appreciate you are bringing this to our attention. - INCORRECT

So the difference between 1st and 2nd is that the 1st one shows their appreciation because I have brought it to their attention, and the 2nd implies that I am d

No.

1 - we appreciate the fact that you have brought this to our attention.

2 - we understand that you are bringing this to our attention (but they might not appreciate it, in the sense of 1)
