My wife playfully asked if I was scared of her. I responded, "You wish I was scared." She proceeded to correct my usage of "was" saying "were" is more apporpriate. So, we "googled" the answer. There are plenty of explanations and most would seem to suggest that, "If I were scared," is most correct. However, what if someone else is wishing on me?
Please help.

Who's wishing makes no difference. 'Was' is less formal, that's all.
