You were the eldest

Hi

Are both versions correct in conversational English?

(A woman talking about her childhood; she had two younger sisters.)

Woman: When our parents were away I was expected to look after the affairs.

Her friend: That's because you were the oldest?

Her friend: That's because you were the eldest?

Thanks,

Tom

PS: Is look after the affairs is a natural phrase in the given context?
