You take your turn at bat

I read a report today on CNN about a US country music star named Tody Keith.
In 2003, the Academy of Country Music named him Entertainer of the Year -- but he wasn't there to pick it up. "The awards are kind of like the All-Star game," Keith said. "You take your turn at bat, smile and give everybody the finger and leave."
I am not a NBA fan, I amnot sure that the title does meaning.
Maybe someone would like describe this for me.
Thanx a lot!
