I have two questions (underlined parts) in the following conversations on technical support at a factory or something:
X: I think you’ve overestimated the need for night supervision. Your costs for that look very high to me. Y: Well, perhaps I should explain how we got to those figures? What we did was to calculate on a three-shift basis, with the night shift - that’s ten till six– using just a skeleton staff. Now, at the moment, you run just one line … X: OK. But hang on a moment. What I still don’t understand is your idea of ‘skeleton staff’. Y: What do you mean? The number of people?
X: Well, yes. How on earth can you justify three engineers working through the night?
Q1. Does “ten till six” refer to the time “10PM till 6AM”? (not 10 people, etc.) Q2. What does “you run just one line …” mean? Could the “line” here mean “a production line”? Thank you for any help. ladybird
