YOU OWE ME ONE

Dear Teachers,

1. Could I leave Polly with you while I'm gone?

- I think "when I'm away" is better, right? Is "I'm gone" standard English?

2. A: I realy appreciate your help. I'll bring her over on Tuesday night.

B: Ok. But you owe me one!

- What does "you owe me one" mean here?

Thanks very much to Teachers,

Stevenukd.

It is true that I am gone is not academic English; all the same, it is correct in adjective position in informal speech.

You owe me one (good turn).
One good turn deserves another (proverb)

Is there a difference between Standard English and academic English for you?

It is accepted standard usage, but you will not see it in academic writings

Hi,

I'm not sure that 'I am gone' is not academic. Would you say the same about 'I am finished'?

[ As a more general, half-humorous comment, I'm inclined to suggest that there is a lot of academic writing that consists of pretty poor English. ]

Best wishes, Clive

Hi Clive,

Our "disagreement" may reside in the fact that I possibly wrongly assume that the concept of academic writing carries the idea of being intelligent, educated, and formal.

OK, got it now. It just that the questioner was asking about standard English and did not mention academic English.
