Let's say you held the door open for me. I normally would say "thank you." If I were on the phone at the time, I may smile and nod to express my thanks. Or, I may just be completely lost in my thoughts and forget to acknowledge your kind act at all.

However, if you then said to me "You owe me a 'thank you,' don't you?" I would be rather offended. You would have taken
