You have played before, have you?

Alan decided to play tennis. So he had a few lessons, and then played for a few months. He met a nice girl at the tennis club one day, and they played a game of tennis against another young man and woman. Alan played very badly, and was very angry with himself, "I've never played as badly as this before," he said to the girl. "Oh," she said, "you have played before, have you?"

you have played before, have you?

The basic rule is a positive statement plus a negative question tag. But here, a positive statement plus a positive question tag makes me confused and I wonder if this is wrong.

cat fold 525 The basic rule is a positive statement plus a negative question tag. 'The important word there is 'basic'. Affirmative tags can be used after affirmative statements to express concern, disbelief interest, surprise, etc at something that has just been said, for example: A: My husband is in New York this week.
