You had me at hello

"You had me at hello".
This is a famous line from the movie "Jerry Maguire".
But I was wondering if this should have been "You had had me at hello" or "You had me + adjective + at hello" because "You had me at hello" doesn't seem to be convey what the speaker was trying to say.

I get the meaning, but I don't understand the construction.
Is it like "You had me (smitten) at hello ?"

You possessed me / had my heart when you said 'Hello'.

You charmed me when you said "Hello!"

Emotion: love ...like love at the first sight.

It's perfectly ok. Also, a sentence doesn't "be convey" what the speaker wants to say. It conveys.
