You got me a gift even thought I'd asked you not to

It's your birthday and you asked everyone not to get you anything a few days before. You walk into your home after work and see a present. You turn around and face your family:

You: Aww, you guys got me a gift even though I'd asked you not to! Is the past perfect here correct?

Would the past perfect and past simple be equally correct?
I've been told that the past perfect in this case is extremely unnatural... Is that true?
