In explaining German grammar to a group of Danish students, can we say?

-You don't use the past tense here./You don't use the preposition this way, because...

The speaker is not a native speaker of German, so WE is not possible.

Yes, if it's understood that it means "When you speak German, you don't use ...", and it seems to me that that is the obvious meaning in a German class.
