you are fine when you actually are not..

You told me that you are fine when you are actually not fine.

Just trying to make a sentence but just couldn't make it. I asked a person, "How are you?" and he replied, "I'm fine" but actually he is sick.

Anyone willing to help?
Thanks

can I use present tense (are instead of were) in case the person is still sick?

You can, but for me, the shift in tenses feels odd.
