Yonst?

Can anyone tell me what this word Yonst means? It is an antibellum, southern word which might have something to do with someone settling "there" or "elsewhere", not here.
Thanks much

  • You might try asking the reference department of the library at the University of Alabama or the linguistics department there.
  • Surely, if anyone would know, it would be someone in one of those two professions (among others, of course), and you would probably be appreciated for asking a very good question.

I didn't notice earlier discussion of this word. Google led me to only one sample, which is consistent with Michael's explanation.

My speculation is that it is derived from "yon".

That seems to be the only sample and it seems to be whence Michael's question comes.

Sounds like a worthy explanation

Is that like a yoni? Or is it more like a box?
