Yet they are

I saw the following in one of the videos on YouTube about the coordinating conjunctions.
Puppies are cute, yet they are a big responsibility.
Can we use "but" in the above?
How do we know if we can use either?

"Yet" is wrong there. The sentence says that depite the fact they are cute, they are a big responsibility. Their cuteness has no bearing on their burdensomeness. A better sentence with "yet" might be "Puppies are cute, yet they are smelly." That means that as cute as they might be to the eye, they are not so cute to the nose.
