I think both are acceptable, as long as you change the first one to "Yesterday I went to the shop but it was not open yet" . And why? Because you're using "open" as an adjective, not as the past participle of the verb "to open".

  • I think both are acceptable, as long as you change the first one to "Yesterday I went to the shop but it was not open yet" .
  • And why?
  • Because you're using "open" as an adjective, not as the past participle of the verb "to open".
  • Hereupon, both sentences have slightly different meanings.
  • The first one indicates that the status of the shop was "closed".
