Yet

How to use yet?

I woke up. He was yet to do so.
I woke up. He had yet to do so.

Are both the same, or is there a tense difference?

Technically the grammar obviously differs, but for most purposes I see no signficant difference in meaning. The first sentence is a bit more forward-looking and the second more backward-looking, but the presence of "yet" somewhat levels this off.
