Thanks for your correcting.

1. Do you mean "I had been working on the speech recital yesterday" is correct?

2. If a question starts with 'what did you do yesterday?' Can you simply reply "I had been doing inventory yesterday" or "I did inventory yesterday"?

Thanks

I have studied the Past Perfect before but from time to time I get very confused. I'll look up again. I just needed to clear a few misunderstanding.

I'd like to know if 'had taken' can be paired with 'a month ago', as in the following:

He told me that he had taken a painting class a month ago and he was going to have his first group exhibition soon.

Thanks

Hi Clive! Why not a month before? We were always taught to use 'ago' only with simple past, fo instance: A month ago he told me he had taken a painting class (but in this case the meaning is different)

And what about saying 'he told me he took a painting class a month ago?

I've read your sentence several times and it makes sense to me, that is why I am confused now. What is
