year too long/much

Greetings,

How do I say that something lasted a year too long? For example an athlete who goes on despite his declining physique and no longer gets the results he used to. Do I say:

It was the year too long.

or

It was the year too much.

Or are there more preferable ways to say this?

Thanks in advance.

About an athlete you can say: "... should have retired a year ago."

For object, or otherwise inanimate things, the expression "... should have been retired a year ago" can work in certain contexts.
