Yeah. Don't forget to drop me a line when you settle down.

Hi,

I am just wondering about the meaning of "drop me a line" in "Yeah. Don't forget to drop me a line when you settle down."?

Thanks in advance.

Here line means a brief bit of writing: a short letter : NOTE [dropped him a line confirming the date] [jotted down a few lines], and drop means to send (as a letter or postcard) by mail -- often used in the phrase drop a line [expected he would drop me a line by now].---Webster's Third

It's my guess that "drop" comes from the idea a placing the letter or card in the mailbox.
