Yard, garden, courtyard

I think these terms might be used differently in the U.K., so I will only speak for American usage. The yard is the area around the house - Front yard, back yard, maybe side yard. In a nice suburban neighborhood it would probably be mostly grass. A garden is an area in which something (besides grass) has been planted. In the UK nearly all houses have gardens in the back. Often there is a garden in the front also. There can be Flower beds in the gardens and sometimes vegetable patches or a larger scale vegetable garden.
