What does 'yard' mean in:
If the defense correctly matches the o ffense's play, then the offense gains 0 yards.?

The site you were directed to defines yard in its British usage. The concept of gaining a yard, is not part of the definition, since it is based on an American Football activity. Scoring is accomplished by carrying the football nine yards (27 feet). Thus, gaining a yard is building towards a scoring position; but gaining zero yards is a failed attempt.

Scoring in American football is in most cases accomplished either by kicking the ball through a set of uprights or bringing the ball past the opponent's goal line. Carrying the football toward that goal line brings a scoring opportunity closer, but there's nothing magic about nine yards, and carrying the ball isn't required (you may throw it as well.)

Sorry. It doesn't work like that. For one thing it's ten yards. For another, that doesn't earn any score.

Actually it's been 91.44 centimeters by definition since 1963 if you want to do "dueling precision".
