Xmas

The words 'did not' is abbreviated as 'didn't'. The 'o' is missing, its place taken by the apostrophe. But why is 'Christmas' abbreviated as 'Xmas'? The letters C, h, r, i, s and t are removed and X is inserted. I've often wondered why it is abbreviated in that way.
