X is a synonym FOR Y or X is a synonym OF Y?

Is it always "X is a synonym for Y" or is it also possible to say, "X is a synonym of Y"?

Thank you

Top answer

" "Of" is not right. "Of" would mean that Y had several synonyms, which is not always true.

It is "for." "Of" is not right. "Of" would mean that Y had several synonyms, which is not always true.

Both are used. In a few periods of history, 'synonym of' was used more than 'synonym for', but currently the trend (since 1960) is to use 'synonym for'.
