X greater than Y

If I write X greater than Y , is it necessary that both X and Y should be noun?
Or, Can I have X and Y as a clause as in sentence below..

An earthquake of a given magnitude typically devastates an area 100 times greater in the eastern United States than it does in the West.

The sentence seems rather to be 'devastates...does'. That is fine.
