001. Explain how the policy of appeasement contributed to the outbreak of the Second World War. 02br

00 Since the 1930’s, Great Britain and France had held onto the policy of granting concessions to an aggressor in the hope of preventing a war. To come to a peaceful agreement with Germany had been the hope all along, however no one suspected the evil inhumanity of Hitler’s plans. Though initially regarded as a positive move, the policy of appeasement caused the eruption of three major European crises; the Rhineland crisis, the Anschluss crisis, and the Czechoslovakia crisis. 02br
00While the rest of Europe was deeply concerned with that of Italy and the invasion of Ethiopia, Hitler used this time to his advantage to reoccupy the demilitarized Rhineland. In March of 1936, though in direct violation of the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler planned to invade and take over the western region of Germany, the Rhineland. Even before he began his invasion, he had a strong suspicion that neither the French nor the British would oppose, he was right. The French, knowing that what Hitler was planning was wrong, were unwilling to act on their own. To their disappointment, Britain refused, fearing a war. However, worse than Hitler violating the Treaty of Versailles, he also violated his pledge made in the Locarno Pact. In this agreement, he had promised not to station troops within fifty kilometers to the east of the River Rhine. The Rhineland crisis was an important part of Hitler’s plans for the coming years. Because of this event, he now knew of Britain’s weakness and the fact that the French were unwilling to act without her. 02br
00 Having learned much about Britain and France from the Rhineland Crisis, Hitler was ready to once again claim another piece of territory. Though known to be a violation of the Treaty, Hitler knew Britain was once again not prepared to defend the agreement. Chamberlain was stuck on the fact that if Hitler’s plans were rational, they should be agreed too. The joining of Austria to German not only gave Germany millions of people and resources; it also established an important relationship between Italy and Germany. Previous to beginning this crisis, Hitler feared Italy’s actions and thoughts more than that of Britain and France. However, when Mussolini approved his plans, an alliance and a common border with Italy assured him that once again his plan would turn out for the better. From the Anschluss crisis, Hitler gained much to his advantage. Along with the seven million people and great deal of valuable resources added to his country, he also gained an important relationship with Italy, which would prove to have quite the effect on WWII. 02br
00 Adolf Hitler, still seen by many as a diplomatic leader, desired to continue his plans of uniting all German-speaking people. Many citizens, along with Chamberlain, believed that once Hitler had finished with addressing his claims of Germany, he would be like any other leader. The world was soon to find out that this was completely incorrect. Being the most important of the three crises, it also caused the most distress to Hitler. Though Britain approved of Germany taking this area, Benes, the Czechoslovakia prime minister, did not. Unlike other leaders, through Hitler’s actions Benes began to see Hitler for who he really was, not a peace-loving leader. Britain had to do much convincing for Benes to give the Sudetenland away. The near future would prove Chamberlain’s opinion of Hitler to be anything but true. The most important of the three catastrophes, the Czechoslovakia crisis proved to the world that Hitler was not who they all thought he was, he was in fact, an aggressor. 02br
00 The policy of appeasement proved to the world that it simply was not effective as thought to be. Instead of winning the favor of surrounding countries, appeasement only caused Hitler to continue his plans of taking over Europe. Chamberlain had been convinced all along that once Hitler’s claims were addressed, he would be a peaceful leader. Britain was led to believe a complete lie, and now the world would suffer to great extents. 0-
