WT2 - PLEASE READ AND GIVE ME FEEDBACK

More and more people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons for this? It is a positive or negative development?

There is now an increasing number of people who prefer to buy renowned brands of products instead of less well-known ones. This happens because of some reasons, and I believe it is a negative trend.

To begin with, there are several factors leading to the fact that people tend to spend more on luxurious products. First, because many consumers are influenced by what other people think of them, they use luxury brands to indicate their social status and achievements. For example, a student who drives a Mercedes car to school would command a great deal of respect for his or her wealth. Second, many people believe luxury goods from famous brands are of higher quality, so they are prepared to pay premium prices for them. A Macbook, for instance, is likely to be perceived as high class and more durable than any other laptop brands. Besides, some people consider buying luxurious things as a way of rewarding themselves for their accomplishments. Whenever they have done something well such as passing an exam or getting promoted at work, they might try to treat themselves to an expensive item which they normally cannot afford.

In my opinion, possessing more famous brands of products does more harm than good. For one thing, buying expensive things is such a waste of money since consumers can purchase affordable products with similar functions. Rather than spending more than 1000 dollars, for example, to own an Iphone X, people only have to pay about 400 dollars for a Samsung cellphone, which features the same functions. Moreover, owning more brand name products does not necessarily make people happier. In contrast, the ultimate happiness, from my perspective, lies in human relationships and what a person can contribute to society not in our glamourous things such as our clothes, cars or houses.

In conclusion, though global demand for well-known brands of items is rapidly growing and the reasons for this are explanatory, I would argue that this trend is more of negative than positive.
