WT2 - Please Check And Give Me Advice

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes, and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only thinks about their wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

My essay:

People have different views about whether children should make up their own mind about things that underlie their daily life. While there are some concerns about giving children the right to make an option, I believe it is better to encourage children to decide alone.

On the one hand, children probably develop some personality problems when they are used to determining for themselves. The first and most obvious danger is that children will become self-centered and show little consideration for others’ feelings and needs. One of the possible consequences of such an attitude could be that they fail to cooperate with their peers in the school. A second deficiency in their personality could be caprice. Children who always get their own way perhaps lack the patience to consider options before making choices. Therefore, it can be argued that children oughtn’t to make their own decisions.

On the other hand, it is perhaps even more significant to prepare children for the aspects of adult life involving lots of decision-making. In the society, adults are expected to set suitable goals, make personal schedules and achieve success on their decisions. Decision-making plays a central role in their life. This is the ability that I suppose parents should foster in young children at home. Instead of arranging everything for their children, parents should give children freedom to choose what suits them best and show them how to make wise decisions.

In conclusion, I can understand why people worry about allowing children to decide by themselves, but it seems to me that the decision-making ability is more vital to the growth of children.
