Wry smile

She: "My dream is to become a teacher someday"

He: "Do you think you're smart enough for that?"

She looked at him, offended. But then a wry smile crossed his lips/face, revealing he was just joking.

- Is a wry smile suiting here to reveal a sarcastic joke or is it another kind of smile I'm looking for?

- What is the difference between a smile crossing one's lips and face?

revealing he was just joking " explains what wry means. It wouldn't be sarcastic because he is expressing that he was just joking. It was a small smile with a hint in his eyes, maybe, that showed the positive emotions he wanted to demonstrate to her.
