Song Writing & Lyrics

Wrting lyrics to a song

I am interested in writing lyrics to a song or gospel song. What are the rules?

I was looking at John Denver's "Take me home country roads" and in it, in almost all cases, the English article seems to be absent and seem to be written as if talking or singing to me right in front of me.

misty taste of moonshine, tear drop in my eyes

miner's lady, stranger to blue water

Thank you.

There aren't any rules... just use your imagination and write it down. When you're done, listen to it...
