Wrote another?

I read the following on a web site:

One reviewer said: [opinion 1] Wrote another: [opinion 2]

Doesn't it have to be "another wrote" instead of "wrote another"? Is this correct english? And if yes, why would you say it that way?

Does that mean it's an old-fashioned way of saying it, and it was more common some time ago?

No. It's a stylistic device. It's used to vary the sentence structures. It's analogous to the more common "Said another" or "Said he".

In written dialog, as in a novel, it is quite common to use this kind of inversion.

"Let's get tickets for the new play," said Mary.

CalifJim: All of your examples sound correct for me, and they're really common - except for the last one. It depends on the word order.

"What day?" asked Bill. - this sounds perfectly OK
Said Bill, "I have to work Friday night." this sounds very strange... I never saw that

I still don't understand why you would want to do that.

It is strange, but you'll find it once in a blue moon.

Just to break the monotony
