Writing task 2.10

Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

It is thought by some governments that the most important goal of a country is economic development. However, some individuals believe that there are other kinds of progress which are equally crucial for a country. In my view, other goals should be prioritized so that a nation can gain a sustainable development.

There are several reasons why economic progress is considered to be the most important goal of a country. One of them is that the development of economy is likely to increase the living conditions of all citizens in that nation. Nowadays, commercial trade is dramatically promoted between countries in the world. If a nation can make progress of economy by importing and exporting, its citizens will be able to obtain a greater job opportunity, which means a better life.

However, beside economic goal, I believe that there are some other crucial ones such as environment and education. Firstly, if a country wants to have a sustainable development, the government should protect the environment, which is being polluted by the economic progress in some countries. Japan is a crime example in this case. Although Japan is a developed country with a high level of industry, Japanese government always makes every possible effort to reduce the amount of carbon emissions and other toxic waste to ensure the quality of the environment. Secondly, education is one fundamental goal which every country should invest in. In the hey days of technology, people need to gain academic qualifications so that they can get a good job in the competitive job market. Therefore, a country needs to foster education systems if it wants to develop the economy successfully. In Japan, children are well educated at an early age, which enables them to become well-rounded citizens, making contribution to the development of their own country.

In conclusion, I strongly hold the belief that in addition to economic progress, governments should take other goals such as environment and education into consideration.
