In countries where there is high unemployment, most pupils should be offered only primary education. There is no point in offering secondary education to those who will have no hope of finding a job. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
Some people assert that it is pointless for people who are hopeless about finding a job to receive upper primary education. Personally, I disagree with this notion and think that education is still good insurance against unemployment.
To begin with, people with higher levels of education have greater employability and better job prospect. In this modern era, thanks to the advanced technologies, labour intensive jobs are giving the way to knowledge-focused jobs, leading to the demands for an academically qualified workforce. Therefore, further education is an important investment that helps people gain knowledge and prepare for high-skilled jobs. Furthermore, as many jobs such as a doctor, engineer require employees to have in-depth knowledge and intelligence, high-education employees would gain a competitive edge over other candidates, this means fewer people would have their jobs, exacerbating the problems of unemployment.
Furthermore, the increased globalization of the trade between countries has created many jobs that require many different skills such as language and other verbal skills. Thus, it is necessary that workers are trained with these skills to meet the jobs’ requirement. In other words, a poorly-educated workforce would act as a barrier for a country to be globalized and commercialized, undermining its economic prospects and consequent social mobility. Additionally, it is unreasonable to define a person who hopeless at finding a job. Granted, the labour market in advanced economies is in a state of flux, there are many jobs have been created with different demands for employees’ qualification. Hence, there is no evidence to confirm that a person who never has a job.
In conclusion, although some believe that hopeless pupils should receive only primary education, I completely disagree with this notion and think that further education is the key to curb the unemployment rate.
