Many developing countries are currently expanding their tourist industries. Why is this a case? Is it a positive development?

In today’s world, many developing countries are heavily invested in their tourist services. Personally, I believe that there are a number of reasons for this trend, and this development can offer advantages to countries.

To begin with, developing tourism might be contributed by many factors. First, in the globalized era, tourism is claimed to be a force for global understanding. By encouraging tourist services, the governments can exchange national culture with other countries and promote cross-cultural awareness of its citizens, diversifying the country’ culture and cementing its international relationships. Second, the thriving tourist industry can also encourage the flow of money from wealthy to less developed countries, alleviating the problem of poverty in many impoverished countries. Ecuador, for example, in every year millions of tourist flock to this country and spend an estimated billions of dollars for tourist services, generating revenue for tourist companies and consequent raising local individual’s income of the country. Therefore, the governments of these developing countries value its tourist sectors.

Furthermore, tourism also enables communities that are poor material but diversified in nature, heritage, cultural identity to use their unique characteristics as an income-generating advantage. For example, in Vietnam, traditional handicrafts such as porcelain catering to the tourist market have flourished, providing many Vietnamese craftsmen with independent incomes. In addition, the expanding tourist services can also create networks of different operations from hotels and restaurants to food suppliers. This enables tourist centres to form varied supply chains of goods and services, creating more jobs for local people.

In conclusion, the authorities of developing countries value the tourist industry because of its educational and economic benefits. The spreading tourist industry is a completely positive trend as it generates income and provides jobs for local people.
