Question
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
When teachers assign projects on which students must work together, the students learn much more effectively than when they are asked to work alone on projects.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It is said that when teachers delegate school projects for students, students would benefit most from working with others rather than working alone. I completely agree with this statement and I will explain my positions.
To begin with, working in groups would allow students to gain valuable insights, which is conducive to learning. For instance, when students discuss with their partners the presentation of psychological problems, they are able to come up with many interesting ideas, mostly from real situations with real people, which would help them to understand more about the subjects. Furthermore, students are likely to maintain better relationships and learn various soft skills through corporation with others. Imagining that one member could not meet the deadline of the group due to her sickness, the other members could share the task together and try to finish on time. As such, not only could they develop this communication or problems solving skills but they also strengthen the bonds with other members.
On the other hand, it is also beneficial for some students to comprehend the project when working alone as they could be more self-discipline and also have the freedom to handle the tasks. However, other than interacting with the teacher, students could not really gain practical experience from others, compared to those working in a group. While working with other team members, students could learn to express themselves appropriately and acknowledge their team’s efforts. The knowledge they attain from others will be imprinted in their memory for good. In other words, students who learn individually have fewer opportunities to know various perspectives and approaches to problems from others and so cannot learn effectively.
To sum up, I believe that when teachers hand in on school projects, working together or working alone still has some benefits among students. Nevertheless, it would be more useful to ask other students to work together so that they could gain a solid knowledge base, both in their learning and in their real-life situations.
