In their school life, students are bound to meet and work with their friends and their teachers. Their teachers can have more impact on students’ lives than their friends. I completely agree with this statement since their teachers can become mentors for students both in their studies and in their personal lives.
To begin with, teachers would be wonderful influencers as teachers can give tremendous support to students’ studies. Take me as an example. Three years ago, when I was a third-year student at Sai Gon University, I, along with my classmates, studied hard to prepare for our IELTS test- an English based test, which was one of the criteria for us to graduate. In addition to using IELTS preparation books, I also asked my friends how they prepared for the IELTS test and some of them told me that I should download many tips and tricks online as well as cram many new English words. To clarify their advice, I decided to have a meeting with my English language teacher, who was also teaching IELTS at that time. In that meeting, I told my teacher about my friends’ advice, and she later consulted me not to follow their words. She went on to say that it would be better if I just kept using authentic materials from Cambridge publishers and then took the test. I followed my teacher’s advice and then got a 7 for my IELTS test, which was eligible for me to graduate, while my friends, those advising me before, did not reach their target for this test to graduate. From this experience, I realized that rather than their friends, their teacher should be more reliable ones for students to turn to the advice in term of their studies.
Furthermore, as teachers are experienced in their lives, teachers can assist their students if they encounter any personal issues. For example, when students have conflicts with their family or their friends, they can turn to their teachers for advice. At that time, not only can teachers help them to address their problems, but they also console them and suggest ways to reinforce their relationships with their beloved ones. As such, students could feel better about their current issue and also appreciate their teachers for their support in their lives.
To sum up, I believe that, for students, their teachers, rather than their friends, could have a more profound influence on their life. This is because they can instruct students and give them precious advice about their studies, as well as they can mentor their students when their students face some personal issues in their lives.
