Writing task 2- TOEFL. Topic: Society

Hi everyone, today I write an essay about giving aid to those in need. This is quite common in my country so I can come up with a few ideas. Still, I hope to receive everyone's feedback.

Task 2:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Nowadays people are more willing to help the people who they don't know (For example, giving food and clothes to the people who need them) than they were in the past.

These days, many people are ready to give other strangers a hand when they are in need, which is more common than before. I completely agree with this statement.

In many countries, in the past, most people still lived in poverty and in harsh conditions because of ineffective national reform and the negative consequences of the war. At that time, few charitable organizations could be able to help them. They might also receive financial support and other things, mostly from the government and the rich people in the society but they only gave help to those in need on special occasions such as on National holidays or after some natural disasters or the post-war era. However, nowadays, many people have more opportunities to help strangers than before.

To begin with, the development of society has improved the living standard of many individuals so there are increasing numbers of people who can be able to help others. For instance, in Vietnam, besides some long-established organizations such as Red-Cross Society, Fund for Reconciliation and Development and Vietnam Assistance for the Handicapped, many non-profit organizations are also established every year. Though their activities are mostly voluntary, participants still work passionately to help underprivileged people. They can run some annual campaigns to call for support in terms of sharing books, clothes for the indigenous children living in Northern Vietnam, or have special funds for immediate use in order to support the homeless or the handicapped people.

Furthermore, there are some effective approaches used to help needy people. To be more specific, in many districts of Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam there is a hotline, which is a special telephone number for everyone to call when seeing disadvantageous ones in their areas. People can also use social media such as Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram to announce some special cases of people in need. I remember that two weeks ago, a story about an old man, who lost his family during the pandemic COVID-19 and had to make ends meet by collecting garbage went viral on Facebook. Being touched by the story, many people discovered the home address of this old man and gave him many gifts and some money to help him. Meanwhile, managers from some companies also offered him some jobs. Thanks to everyone’s help, he can overcome his difficulties, and now he has just worked as a security guard in the bank near his house.

To sum up, I believe that currently, many people are more willing to give support to others than they used to be in the past. The development of society has enabled people to improve their living standards and so establish more organizations to help others. Also, different effective means of communication have allowed people to inform about special cases of people in need and assist them.
