Writing task 2- TOEFL . TOPIC: MONEY- EDUCATION

Task 2:

Some parents offer their school-age children money for each high grade (mark) they get in school. Do you think this is a good idea?

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Some parents give their children money to encourage their students when obtain high grades (marks) in school. I disagree with this statement.

To begin with, using money as praise for children to get high scores will perpetuate false beliefs about money for these children. For example, one straight-A kid in the class can normally boast around his classmates that he always gets money from his parents every time he gets a high score and this allows him to use money as a tool to ask his friends to do what he wants. Doing this will make other kids believe that money can be important when it comes to status and power in class, which is completely wrong. As a result, they are more likely to imitate that kid by asking their parents to give them money when they get good grades.

Furthermore, that parents could give money to their children when they get high scores would tempt more unhealthy behaviours toward learning among students. In order to get good grades and of course the money, many students will try their best in various ways. For instance, some students will spend more excessive time studying both at home and at school, while others would try to cheat in the exam by using books or some electronic devices with the information included. No matter what ways they use, these ways would lead to negative consequences. Students who study too much would affect their memory and also suffer from stress and sleep deprivation. Meanwhile, those who cheat in the exam will get caught and so they can get punishment and also have their cheating acts recorded in the students’ report.

In brief, I believe that parents offering students money to get high grades would be detrimental to the students, both mentally and physically as students would have false beliefs about money and unhealthy behaviours towards learning.
