Writing task 2- TOEFL . TOPIC: JOB ORIENTATION

Hello everybody, today I wrote an essay about job orientation. That topic could be a little bit odd for me so I hope that my essay will not be out of topic. Emotion: smile

Thanks a bunch!

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

In the past, it was easier to identify what type of career or job would lead to a secure, successful future.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

In the past, people found it easier to know about the type of job or career that would drive them to a bright, safe future. I disagree with this statement.

To begin with, in the previous times, since parents and other adults had little information about job orientation, they might advise children to follow their footsteps or choose the job that could be common in their times. Take my father as an example. When he was young, his mother- a retired math teacher always asked him to become a teacher because she believed that being a teacher would gain more respect from others and also have a steady income. My dad at that time did not know much about his career path so he decided to listen to his mom’s advice and believe in his career choice. However, things changed when he became a math teacher. At that time, he got very low pay and was always busy with his schedule at school. Therefore, his decision based on his mother’s advice about his future job makes my father regret thereafter.

Furthermore, previously, there were few sources for people to turn to when it comes to identifying their successful career paths. Many years ago, newspapers, TV and radios could be the most prevalent forms to help people keep track of the current trends. Yet, these means of widespread communication did not inform well about how to identify their personality traits to decide which jobs would best suit them or any advice about career preparation. Rather, there were daily news mostly about society and also some advertisements about products such as instant noodles and sweet drinks, both in newspapers and on TV, which might not be really helpful for those in need. As a result, many people, other than asking their friends and learning some information about society from media, could not really visualize what type of occupation would make them successful in their future.

To sum up, I believe that in the past, it was more difficult for everyone to know what type of career or job would lead to a secure, prosperous future because they normally took advice from their parents or friends- those who might not know much about job orientation and there was not enough information from mass media to assist them for their future career.
