In the modern world it is possible to shop, work and communicate with people via Internet and live without any face-to-face contact with others. Is it a positive or negative development in your opinion

In today’s world, the internet has revolutionized the way people shop, work and communicate. In fact, these internet-based activities are replacing face to face interaction between people. Personally, I believe that this development has both positive and negative impact on our society.

To begin with, with the advances in the internet people nowadays are able to shop and work from home, cutting the expenses of commuting and allowing more time for the personal obligation. For example, many employees in western countries choose to telework as it not only cut down unnecessary expenses but also allow them to manage time proactively. In fact, parents working at home could have more time to shoulder family responsibilities. Furthermore, goods are now widely available for online purchase, providing people with a wide product’s selection. The internet also facilitated connection among distant people, allowing them to keep in touch with each other without geological barriers.

However, the potential hazard of communicating via the internet is it could lead to social isolation. It is common that people today have large numbers of friends but few actual companions, resulting in a lack of interpersonal skills among people especially youngsters. In Japan, many white-collar workers have suffered from loneliness, some of them even have to hire fake families to be their companies. Furthermore, lacking privacy is another danger. Facebook, for instance, revealed that millions of personal data were stolen to serve criminal purposes. Over the century cybercrime have made companies and individuals suffer financially.

In conclusion, I believe that the internet has changed the nature of people’s shopping, working and communicating both positively and negatively.
