1. More and more people in the city live in homes with small spaces or no outdoor areas. Do you think it is a negative or positive development?

Due to the soaring cost of living, many urban dwellers today choose to live in compact houses or homes with no outdoor places. From my perspective, I think that this is a positive trend of development as living in small spaces is more affordable and brings benefits to communities.

First, small houses are often energy-efficient, thus, allowing families to live economically. Small houses have less space for electronic applications such as air conditioning or refrigerators. Indeed, recent research concluded that these heating and cooling systems account for 47% of total energy consumption in American houses. Therefore. Living in tiny houses is a sensible choice to cut down on the use of these devices, helping people to save on energy expenses. Furthermore, fewer and smaller rooms require less time spent on cleaning and home maintenance, allowing people to save their valuable time.

Second, houses with outdoor areas are unsuitable for modern life in cities as it results in housing scarcity in society. Due to the rising urban population, the land and property costs in urban areas are becoming increasingly expensive, resulting in the problem of housing shortages in many cities. For example, in Beijing, lower-class citizens have to live in austere houses or even become homeless. Therefore, instead of living in homes with outdoor areas, more people opt for co-housing as it can contain more people.

In conclusion, I believe that living in homes with small spaces or no outdoor areas is beneficial for city dwellers and communities as it helps families to save on energy bills and solve the problem of housing scarcity.
