The only way to improve road safety is to give stricter punishments on driving offenses

To what extent do you agree to disagree?

The issue of road safety is being more concerned than ever before as a result of the gradual increase in the number of serious accidents. While it is true that publishing more rigorous punishments will deter many motorists from driving dangerously or carelessly, I disagree that this is the only method to ameliorate the situation because there alternative methods which also be effective.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that stricter penalties bring certain efficiency. The motorists will try to avoid committing traffic offenses as much as possible due to being alerted that an extremely heavy fine shall be paid if they are caught disobeying traffic law. For instance, in Vietnam, if people controlling vehicles break regulation such as exceeding speed limits, not wearing helmets or driving while intoxicated, they shall pay a high amount fine or even be prohibited driving for a period of time. Under some circumstances, should the faults are morally serious, for example the driver intends to cause accident, sentencing to prison will be strictly applied. As a result, the number of offenders decrease drastically.

On the other hand, apart from promulgating severe punishments, there are some other practical measures to improve road safety. Firstly, the state should allocate resources to upgrading transport system. Take developing countries of which transportation infrastructure is at low standard as an example. By widening streets, installing adequate lights traffic at every crowded crossroad or banning certain types of vehicle at rush-hour, not only do these lessen the traffic pressure for such big cities but they also generate safer traffic environment. In addition, the local authorities should promote news and update information related to road safety status via social media so as to raise people’s awareness. This ensure safety for both each individual and the whole society.

In conclusion, no one can deny that harsh penalties are of important necessity to make road safety better, but it is not enough. A range of alternative measures should be integrated in order to achieve the highest effect.
